ELIOT RAISED HIS EYEBROWS WHEN I trudged back into his office much sooner than expected.
âI donât want to talk about it,â I announced.
âFine.â He turned back to his computer. âWeâll leave for the range in an hour. Can you entertain yourself until then or do you need me to take off my shirt and flex?â
âYouâre in a very weird mood.â I huffed and grabbed my computer. âWhy is that?â
âYou bring it out in me.â
âFair enough.â
My stomach was growling when Eliot announced it was time for lunch. We opted for Thai because weâd been overloading on greasy coneys for days, and then we headed to the range. Iâd only been there once â not long after we met â and our relationship had changed drastically since.
âAm I undercover while Iâm there?â I asked when he pulled into the parking lot. âI mean ... am I supposed to pretend to be someone other than your girlfriend?â
âWhile I might find that funny, it would be a wasted effort,â Eliot replied. âEveryone knows youâre my girlfriend. Theyâve seen you on television.â
I brightened. âYou have a celebrity girlfriend. You must be the hit of the range.â
âMostly they apologize and ask how I manage to keep from killing you.â
âIâve wondered that myself.â
Eliot flashed a laminated card when we got to the front bubble. The door that led to the interior was locked â for obvious reasons â and I was curious when he passed the woman behind the bubble an extra twenty dollars.
âThanks, Lorna.â He smiled and winked at her as he shoved his wallet in his back pocket. âI donât think weâll be here long.â
âYes, well ... .â Lorna had one of those disapproving faces that make lemon juice drinkers jealous. The look she shot me was straight out of a horror movie ... and it almost made me laugh. âHave fun with your training.â
âI will.â I waited until we were clear of the woman and free of potential eavesdroppers to ask the obvious question. âWhat training?â
âI might have lied,â Eliot hedged as he led me toward a bank of lockers on the back wall. âI told the people involved that you needed to learn how to shoot for your safety, that I was very worried, and then I issued a sob story that wouldâve made you proud. That means you actually need to fire a gun and act as if Iâm training you.â
The request wasnât overblown, so I readily agreed. âOkay. Where do we do that?â
âI have to get my gear from my locker and load the gun.â His eyes were busy as he scanned the aisles. âMike is over in number two. Weâre taking number three. Try not to immediately ask him weird questions because I donât want to explain what youâre doing.â
âIâm not a newb.â
âYouâre a newb here.â
âYeah, yeah, yeah.â I focused on Baxter while Eliot prepared ... well, whatever he needed to prepare. He was often armed and kept guns in our house, but I paid zero attention to that. When
